CRC Error, Cyclic Redundancy Check, Feature Transfer Error

CRC Errors, Cyclic Redundancy Check Errors, and Feature Transfer Errors commonly occur when trying to access physical media like a CD or DVD. The error occurs when a program attempts to access data on the physical media, but for whatever reason, the data is not returned successfully.

This error is usually caused by either a damaged or scratched CD/DVD, or a faulty CD/DVD drive.

This problem can be verified by attempting to copy the contents of the disc to the hard drive:

  1. Right-click the desktop, and select New Folder
  2. Name the folder whatever you want, like CD test
  3. Insert the CD or DVD into the disc drive
  4. Open My Computer, right-click the drive with the disc in it, and select Open
  5. Click Edit > Select All, then click Edit > Copy
  6. Open the folder you created on the desktop, and select Edit > Paste

  • If an error occurs during this copy attempt, then either the disc is damaged, or the drive is faulty. The drive can be checked by replacing it with another CD/DVD drive, and performing the same test. The disc can be checked by attempting to copy the files on another CD/DVD drive.
  • If the disc is damaged, then a cleaning attempt can be made. However, if the damage is significant, then it is probably beyond repair. In this case, a new disc must be obtained, usually the manufacturer will send a replacement disc for a small fee.

If all of the data is copied successfully, then the problem lies elsewhere.
