Utility programs are the opposite of application programs. Application programs include software such as Office Suites, Web Browsers, multimedia players and computer games; software which the user typically interacts with and which obviously does things for the user's productivity or enjoyment. By contrast Utilities normally perform a single task at a lower level, commonly but not exclusively related to the maintenance of a computer. Scandisk and regedit are examples of utilities which come with the Windows Operating System.

It is also possible to get utility packages which include a number of these programs.
