A firewall is a device or an application that controls what information goes into a computer based on preset rules or a user's preferences. There are two types of firewalls, hardware firewalls and software firewalls. Hardware firewalls can be complex thousand-dollar set-ups or a simple router. Every router is a hardware firewall and blocks unwanted access, these usually do not need to be configured but can be.. There are also software firewalls, which often have more settings but can be annoying and can be comprised by malware. Everyone accessing the internet should have some sort of a hardware firewall, most likely a firewall, but most often software firewalls are not necessary if you are safe online.
