Random Access Memory (also known as memory or RAM) is part of a computer that holds data that only needs to be used temporarily.

Interface Types

The most common desktop RAM types are:

  • EDO - 72 pin
  • SDRAM - 168 pin
  • DDR - 184 pin
  • DDR2 - 240 pin
  • DDR3 - 240 pin

Each RAM type has its own specifications, and none of them are compatible with each other.

RAM Testing

A simple way to test the integrity of a memory stick is to use MemTest86+. This is a program that is either sent to a floppy disk, or burned to a CD. Upon restarting the computer, it boots this program instead of the operating system, and performs a thorough test of the system RAM. If any errors are encountered, then there is a problem with the memory system.
