Spam Protection
From TSG Library of Knowledge
Spam is unsolicited email messages. Just like the junk mail you get in the mail, it usually contains advertisements, but can also include phishing scams to try to trick you into giving someone personal information.
Most ISPs provide at least a basic level of spam filtering, and usually offer a web site that you can use to adjust your spam settings.
The following utilities are designed to help reduce the amount of spam you receive.
Free Spam Protection
- MailWasher is a free, open-source spam protection program for Microsoft Exchange servers. Their "FirstAlert" service costs money to subscribe to, but basic spam filtering, including RBLs (Real-time Block Lists), is free.
Paid Spam Protection
- Cloudmark starts at $40/year for personal use, but is very effective and easy to use.
Other Techniques
- If you use GMail, you can create an almost separate e-mail account. If you're suspicious about submitting your e-mail enter your address as [your-mail]+[web site name]@gmail.com. For example, if your e-mail is johndoe@gmail.com and you want to join a mailing list at techweekly.com you can enter johndoe+techweekly@gmail.com. Then if the site starts sending you spam, just block that address.
